An oil change is a vital aspect of your vehicle's operation. It plays a key role in making sure your ride is able to get you from Point A to Point B around Jacksonville, Orange Park, and St. Augustine, Florida.

Continue reading to find out what happens while your car is getting an oil change.

The Oil Change Itself

Overall, an oil change appointment should take about 20 minutes to complete. The actual act of draining out the oil and replacing it with the new oil and oil filter can take anywhere from eight to ten minutes.

A Thorough Inspection

Next comes the examination of a few areas in order to keep your on-road companion going strong. This part should take up the rest of your appointment.

Here's what is covered:

  • All belts: All of the engine's belts will be carefully examined to make sure they are in proper working order. If a belt shows signs of aging, such as glazing, bulging, or rotting, it needs to be replaced right away.
  • Cabin and engine filters: The air filters for the cabin and the engine are there to keep harmful contaminates from becoming an issue. In the case of the cabin, the filter ensures that all occupants are breathing clean air while they're on board. The engine air filter prevents debris from getting into the engine and slowing things down. It is recommended that these filters be replaced if either of them is getting too dirty.
  • All fluids: During an oil change is also when the brake fluid, antifreeze, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid will be checked and refilled, if necessary.
  • Battery: The car battery will receive a good once-over as well. Things that the technicians will be looking for include signs of erosion and leaking.
  • Windshield wiper blades and washer fluid: The front and back windshield wiper blades are turned on at this time to make sure they're working correctly. The washer fluid will also be inspected and filled as needed.
  • Tire rotation: If you would like, you can have the tires rotated while the oil change is taking place. It's a good way to stay ahead of any wear and tear.
